FAQs about WareMatch

A hazardous material, or hazmat, is any substance or product classified as dangerous under federal regulations, including the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Hazardous Materials Regulations (HMR) and international standards such as IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). In a 3PL warehousing context, hazmat includes flammable liquids, aerosols, lithium batteries, corrosives, oxidizers, toxic chemicals, compressed gases, and radioactive materials. These items require specialized storage, handling, and transport protocols to protect people, property, and the environment.

The most common dangerous goods handled by 3PL providers include flammable liquids and solids such as paints, solvents, and adhesives; aerosols such as spray cans and personal care products; lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries such as consumer electronics and EV components; corrosives such as cleaning agents and industrial chemicals; oxidizers and organic peroxides; toxic and infectious substances; compressed gases; and pesticides or agricultural chemicals.

Hazmat and dangerous goods refer to the same category of regulated substances but are used in different regulatory contexts. Hazmat is the term used by the U.S. Department of Transportation under domestic regulations, while dangerous goods is the internationally recognized term used by IATA for air transport, IMDG for ocean freight, and ADR for European road transport. For 3PL providers operating across multiple transport modes, both terms apply.

The U.S. Department of Transportation regulates hazardous materials under 49 CFR, Parts 100–185. Key requirements for 3PL providers include proper classification by UN number, compliant packaging and labeling, accurate shipping papers, mandatory employee hazmat training under 49 CFR Part 172, Subpart H, and registration with DOT for specific hazard classes and quantities.

For air transport, 3PL providers must comply with IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR). This includes using UN-specification packaging approved for air transport, completing a Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods, following quantity limits per aircraft type, and ensuring staff are certified in IATA DGR with recertification required every 2 years.

A Safety Data Sheet, or SDS, is a standardized document that provides detailed information about a hazardous substance, including chemical properties, health hazards, and emergency response measures. Under OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard, 29 CFR 1910.1200, 3PL providers must maintain current SDS files for every hazmat product in their facility, and these must be accessible to warehouse staff at all times.

A certified hazmat facility must meet specific safety standards, including segregation zones to keep incompatible hazard classes separate, specialized fire suppression systems, spill containment such as secondary containment berms or pallets, ventilation systems to prevent hazardous vapor buildup, and compliance with NFPA 30 and other applicable fire codes.

No. Lithium-ion and lithium-metal batteries are Class 9 dangerous goods and require specialized storage to reduce the risk of thermal runaway and fire. Compliant facilities must follow specific packaging standards such as UN 3480 and UN 3481, along with fire safety protocols such as those outlined in NFPA 855. Standard warehouses are typically not equipped to handle these requirements.

Hazmat shipments require a complete documentation package, including a Hazmat Shipping Paper, a Bill of Lading with proper hazmat descriptions, Emergency Response Information such as an ERG guide or SDS, and a Shipper's Declaration for Dangerous Goods for air freight. All documents must include the UN number, proper shipping name, hazard class, and a 24/7 emergency contact number.

Non-compliance can result in severe penalties. Civil penalties can reach up to $84,425 per violation per day under 49 U.S.C. § 5123. Criminal penalties can exceed $179,933 per violation, and airlines may blacklist shippers or refuse future cargo. Partnering with a certified 3PL through WareMatch significantly reduces these liability risks.

WareMatch filters its 3PL network by specific hazard class certifications, DOT registration status, and facility capabilities such as spill containment and fire code compliance. Shippers submit their product requirements, and the platform connects them with pre-vetted partners who are already equipped to handle those specific regulated materials.

Yes. WareMatch simplifies the process by providing transparent partner profiles that detail certifications and capabilities. This removes the guesswork for businesses navigating dangerous goods regulations for the first time, ensuring they are matched with partners who maintain full regulatory compliance.

Through vision, drive, and a commitment to continuous improvement, WareMatch has brought a platform to the market that is taking strides to further modernize the warehousing industry. From day one, Ryan Kalisky welcomed our team and made us feel like a priority, while Ben Toulch and Jacob Brown have been hands-on, responsive, and invested in our success through their platform. From our perspective, the platform itself is intuitive, thoughtfully designed and clearly built by operators who understand the real challenges that exist in the warehousing world. During our onboarding, the team went as far as to add a feature specifically for our needs, which reinforced their commitment to the users of their platform. The team has not broken their promise of always being available and brings a hard-to-find level of hustle and integrity to everything they do. WareMatch is not just a solution that we use, it is a team that we have genuinely enjoyed partnering with.
